Presentations, Videos & Case Stories
As a NYS Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force partner agency, the NYS DCJS Missing and Exploited Children Clearinghouse (MECC) offers programs about online safety to students, parents, faculty and civic groups. The programs (PowerPoint® with embedded video clips) include the following:
"Internet Safety for Middle and High School Students" features discussion about long-term and emerging online issues and advice about how to avoid becoming a victim. Making informed decisions, limiting risks and consequences is emphasized throughout the program. Issues discussed include: cyber bullying, "sexting," techniques used by online predators, disclosure of too much personal information and alternatives to running away. Discussion about actual cases and videos of children talking about experiences are used to compliment instruction. In addition to basic safety guidelines, information about Facebook privacy settings and use of strong passwords is also included. The program is about 40 minutes in length.
"Internet Safety – A Parent's Guide to the Internet" and "Internet Safety – A Teacher's Guide to the Internet" address long-term and emerging dangers that put children at risk every time they go online. These include: online enticement, access by children to pornography, child pornography, "sexting" and cyber bullying. Other issues discussed include: instant messaging, blogs and social networking sites (i.e., Facebook.com) and "Chatroulette." Safety tips and rules are offered, as well as a demonstration on setting parental controls. The educator's version includes tips and resources for teachers, including information on acceptable use policies and guidelines for administrators. The presentations are about 60 minutes in length and are followed by a question and answer session.
